"Old Glory Flies High Over American Homes in Richfield Springs"

July 3, 2007

In honor of our national holiday, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, American Homes raised a 15 foot by 25 foot American flag atop of a 70 foot flagpole. Lights surround the flagpole so that the American flag can be properly illuminated for display during the evening hours.

QUICK FACTS

Independence Day commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 (although it was not declared as a legal holiday until 1941). The Independence Day celebration is a reminder of the ideals on which the nation was founded.

The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 8, 1776. On that day the Declaration of Independence was read aloud, city bells rang, and bands played. Today it is celebrated in all states and territories of the United States by parades and marching bands, community concerts and patriotic speeches, American flags flying from buildings and homes, and elaborate displays of fireworks. Many people observe the national holiday by having picnics and barbeques with family and friends.

The American flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes (7 red alternating with 6 white), and in the upper corner near the staff, a rectangular blue field or canton containing 50 five-pointed white stars. The stripes symbolize the 13 colonies that originally constituted the United States of America. The stars represent the 50 states of the Union.

The symbolic meanings of the colors used in the American flag are as follows: "White signifies Purity and Innocence", "Red signifies Hardiness and Valor", and "Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice."

The American flag is frequently called or referred to as the Star-Spangled Banner, Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes, and the Red, White and Blue.
